But now she saw no sign of French Pete and, being too young for concentration, she let her glance rove to other points of the compass. So she was first to become aware that a rider came from the north, the direction of Sulphur Falls, and she called her grandfather to come and see. The horseman loped easily into sight through the brown dust that rose about him. His horse was slim and clean limbed and ran steadily, but Brandon noted that it was showing signs of a long journey made too fast. It was a good horse, but it would not go much farther at the pace it was keeping. And then he frowned as he recognized the rider.

The Land of Strong Men

The Land of Strong Men

A. M. Chisholm

Westerns

It was light, but not yet day. The shadows of the night seemed to linger, to retreat with reluctance; and as they were beaten back by the sun, still far below the eastern curve of the earth and further blockaded by giant mountain ranges also to the eastward, the clinging, gray morning mists of early Fall came to replace them. In the pallid light, a-swim with vapor, objects loomed gigantic and grotesque. The house which stood among the mists was of squared timbers, mortised and fitted. It was unpainted, and the interstices were neatly filled with plaster. The main part was two stories in height, but back of this and joined to it was another log building, long and low. Evidently this had been the original dwelling, to which the more pretentious structure had been added. From one window of this rear building a light glimmered.

Short Story about the American frontier in the 1800s. Prairies are one of God’s greatest gifts, but these can also turn deadly. Pioneers take desperate measures to save everything they have created. The inspiration for my stories draws from my novels and family tales of settlers who journeyed to the American frontier in the 1800s. Their accounts, passed down through the generations, paint pictures of courageous and adventurous people—a hearty lot—who had perseverance, self reliance, and, despite dangers and fears of the unknown wilderness, overcame their misgivings. Most were not famous or widely celebrated, yet they carved out homes, farms, and a life on the frontier, and, in the process, created a great nation. They are heroes in my eyes. From my research, I better understand the plight of early Native Americans. They were ultimately swept aside by the oncoming tide of settlers, despite being fierce and resourceful. There came a time for compassion by the conquering invaders. In too many instances, it did not occur and remains a part of America’s legacy.Thank you for reading my short stories.Richard Puz

A Christmas Carol - Drama Script

A Christmas Carol - Drama Script

Daris Howard

Romance / Westerns / Historical

In this adaption of the story by Charles Dickens, the playwright has used his skills as a playwright, as well researching both the time period and the life of Dickens, to bring an understanding of who Scrooge was, why he was the way he was, and what Dickens was trying to share in this story. In this adaption of the story by Charles Dickens, the playwright has used his skills as a playwright, as well researching both the time period and the life of Dickens, to bring an understanding of who Scrooge was, why he was the way he was, and what Dickens was trying to share in this story. For example, the phrase ‘humbug’, often used by Scrooge, in our modern language would be close to the word ‘scam’. It appears likely that Dickens, through the eyes of Scrooge, was expressing, as many do today, that Christmas is too commercialized. Through this adaption, hopefully the audience will find themselves understanding the world of Dickens more, as well as his religious feelings about what Christmas is really all about.

James Hirt

Poetry that flirts with the edge dealing with loss from divorce and betrayal. Pulling no punches, this medium uses anger as a short term coping mechanism to move through to the other side.Earth Kid Hero book series chronicles the adventures of a young earth boy named Tyler Parker. Tyler is asked by an alien boy named Ethan to accept a serious mission which will project him across the galaxy to a distant star. The quest is not all fun and games as he and his crew become runners in an effort to escape the robot ship chasing them. Tyler has a hunger for adventure but an aversion to risk. He makes his way through a maze of obstacles during his journey with untapped bravery. After reading several books with my oldest son, including Harry Potter, How to Train Your Dragon and more, I thought it would be a novel idea to develop my series of children’s alien books. The first book begins on earth and ends with a cliff hanger on the way to planet Ganrea.

Jack Schaefer

Westerns / Children's Books

Monte Walsh has never met a horse he couldn’t ride, and Chet Rollins has never met one he couldn’t rope. For a decade they are unbeatable and inseparable, working as trail hands throughout the West until finally settling with Cal Brennan’s Slash Y. Their rough cowboy ethics see them through every imaginable challenge: blizzards, rustlers, outlaws, and card games gone wrong. Partial to pretty women, gambling, and practical jokes, Monte is often on the receiving end of trouble, while Chet is always there to break him out of jail or serve as a decoy until Monte can get out of town in a hurry. As the West begins to change, however—the automobile replacing the horse, the herds breaking up—the two friends part ways. Chet marries and goes on to become a successful merchant, banker, and politician; but Monte, unable to imagine anything but the cowboy’s way of life, refuses to the end to leave the range.
